why can't refrigerators be laid down

refrigerators are designed to work in specific positions, and laying them down can cause the compressor to malfunction. Refrigerators are usually made with an upright position in mind so they can use gravity to their advantage. Air is pulled into the fridge through vents on the back of it, which way when it is laid down these vents need to be covered which would interfere with air coming in and out of the fridge causing it not to cool properly. Another issue when refrigerated is turned upside down is that water will leak from its evaporator coil onto its electrical components and cause a short circuit that could be hazardous for anyone nearby .

Refrigerator tips:

-Place old newspapers under your refrigerator before you lift it up. This will prevent scratching your floor.

-Do not move your refrigerator when it is full of food and drinks.

-Check that the door closes properly and that there is no damage to the hinges before you lift your refrigerator.

-If you intend to move your refrigerator, check with an expert first.

-Moving a empty refrigerator is easier than moving one that is full of food.

-Dig up or lift the plug out with a screwdriver after lifting so it does not drag on the ground and cause an electrical shock or fire hazard.

-Stand on a table or ladder if necessary and make sure it's sturdy before you start lifting.

-Make sure there is a good grip under the refrigerator.

-Check the plug to see if it's damaged or worn out before you start moving it.

-Take things out of your refrigerator and clean up the inside before you move your refrigerator.

-Never try to lift or move a refrigerator that is hot. Wait until it cools down or call an expert to take care of it for you.

A broken fridge:

-When moving a new refrigerator, check that every thing works properly first. It's also best to have someone help you do this in case something goes wrong during transport and they can prevent injury while lifting the fridge and setting it in place .

-Moving a fridge that is older than five or six years old requires special attention.

-If you lift an older model refrigerator and it's leaking, remove the floorpan to prevent water from spreading to electrical parts in the fridge.

To move a refrigerator with a full freezer:

-Stand on a stool, or standing pad and place one hand under the bottom of the fridge before you lift it. The other hand should be protecting your body so that you don't get hurt if the fridge falls while you are lifting it up .

-Take hold of both sides of the hinged doors and pull them upwards . Don't pull the doors down because they could damage the hinges and make them unstable for further movement .

-If attaching a lift under the bottom of the fridge you can use a tubular steel rod and a ratchet strap to secure the fridge securely .

-If your refrigerator has a metal bottom then tape it with duct tape before you move it. Also make sure that there is no dirt or debris on that part of the metal.

-Lift up the refrigerator by its handles and slowly lower it down onto its wheels . If there are no wheels don't worry; you can always attach them later once they are in place .

-If your fridge has an ice maker, remove it and place it away from other moving parts as well as electrical cords. Also disconnect electrical sources such as appliances , microwaves, etc.
